iTunes and QuickTime for Windows XP cannot be installed without Visual Basic Script (VBScript

Posted on April 14th, 2007 in IT Solutions by Terp

A friend resently got this error:

The installer has encountered an unexpected error installing this package. This may indicate a problem with this package. The error code is 2738.

In some cases, and the error message may read:

iTunes could not be installed because Visual Basic Script (VBScript) is not installed or has been disabled. Make sure VBScript is installed, turn off script blocking in anti-virus and personal firewall software, reregister VBScript, and the install iTunes.

This error came in the preparering stage of iTunes and all you need is:

http://www.arismls.com/support/downloads/XP2k_Script56.exe

or from microsoft:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=C717D943-7E4B-4622-86EB-95A22B832CAA

If the VBScript is installed, it might not be registered. To re-enable the VBScript, do this:

1) On the Start menu, click Run.
2) In the “Open” field, enter the following command and click OK.
3) regsvr32 %SystemRoot%\system32\vbscript.dll
4) A message should appear stating that the “DllRegisterServer in C:\WINDOWS\system32\vbscript.dll succeeded.”

click OK and try to install itunes again :)

Msn cant connect

Posted on April 13th, 2007 in Windows Vista by Terp

Well, we all had this problem, if you havnt .. you will
Windows messenger has some strange errors once in a while

but in most cases its a firewall problem so, and the funny part is its probertly nothing about port fowarding in windows firewall, but instead try to turn off, then enable window firewall again, this i a common problem for me in vista, and i dont have any permenant solution for this yet :(

but if you tried that, then it can only be one thing, the time.. messenger will NOT connect if your time and date is wrong on the computer, you can try to use Microsofts NTP server for time sync. but this service dosnt really work :P
so, set the corrent time, date and year and that should be that!

every customer i have serviced, that had msn problemes, 95% of the problem was the time. this also apply for winxp

Removing Spyware

Posted on April 9th, 2007 in Windows XP by Terp

While i was working at a computer store, there was ALOT of spyware removal and here is a quick quide to what i use to do, these little steps have worked most of the time
Its best if you scan while in Safe mode, but you can use it in normal boot, but if it dosnt really remove the spyware, then reboot in safe mode and try again

Oki
I use these apps:
Windows Defender, for protecting against spyware attack and it also have a good scanner

HiJackThis, This program shows all the stuff your computer starts up when windows is loading

If your computer isnt WGA approved, you cant install windows defender, or can you? yes you can..
There is an option to windows defender that does a silent install, witch means that it dosnt ask you any question doing install, to do this:
1) Goto Start -> Run
2) Type the full path to the directory where you downloaded windows defender to (e.g. C:\WindowsDefender.msi)
3) Before you click OK add this to the end of the text field: -qr so it looks like: “C:\WindowsDefender.msi -qr”
4) Click OK and wait for the installer to finish

Ok, after we installed Windows Defender, open it and and wait for it to update its database, there will be an green shield in the midle of app when its updated, i think its orange when you first start it up.
But before we start using defender we are gonna have a look at hijackthis

When you first start it up, it has a couple of options, like: “Do a system scan and save a logfile” or “Do a system scan only”
but click the button on the bottom “None of the above, just start the program”
and here is what you shall do:
1) Click “Scan” this will scan all the computers start up folders, reg entries and so on
Now you maybe think .. “holy sh*t there is alot for stuff listning there” but that my friend is what is slowing it down
2) Now here comes the tricky part, you have to de select all the things you dont know or dont trust, this can be hard if you dont “know your computer”, but if the file is in a folder that you know, e.g symantec, then it could be a product like Norton Antivirus or Internet Security.
3) Click “Fix selected” and wait until its done

Oki now we have decreased the boot time
Now run a quick scan with Windows Defender (is located in start)
The thing about Windows Defender is that it isnt located in the system tray, its only located in the system tray when it found some spyware og needs to update

When the scan is complete and it has solved the found problems (if any) then reboot and that should be it! :)

Remote v2 Problem

Posted on April 8th, 2007 in Windows Mediacenter by Terp

I had enough, everytime i rebooted my mediacenter machine the remote didt work for some reason?
then i had to uninstall the driver, install it again and if that didt work either i just had to do it a couple of more times and then it would work until next reboot

so, i thought, maybe its a driver problem, and it was!
i downloaded a new driver for the remote at: http://www.byremote.com.au/Hip/mce_remote_faq.htm
and it worked.

Installation:
Download: http://burningzeroad.free.fr/MceIrApi.rar

Right click on “My computer” and click “Properties”
Click the tab “Hardware” and click “Device Manager”
Now expand the “Universal Serial Bus controllers”
Rightclick on the “ehome remote” and click “Update driver”
Mark “No, not this time” and click next
Click “Install from a list or specific location”
Click “Don’t search. I will choose the driver to install”
Click “Have Disc” and if you allready extracted the files in the rar file you downloaded, then locate the file “mceir.inf” and click OK
Select the MCE Infrared Remote Receiver and the rest should be easy :)
After you now have rebooted the problem is solved

*** UPDATE ***

I found out that it dosnt remove the problem, but it does make the error not appear that often, so hang on, looking for a solution =)
